"variations on the fibonacci sequence" world premiere at font music festival (spidermonkey stories)
forbes graham opened with a new piece commissioned by FONT, with his trumpet silently muted yet triggering a wall of processed electronics that he would bend with a joystick like a spaceship pilot going into light speed. really intense and hypnotic music, a great combination of the electric and the acoustic, the human and the mechanical.
"another return" cd-r (hurd audio)
this one shrinks the ears and places them within an imagined microscopic soundscape tinged by the resonance of the trumpet's brass plumbing. "you're here with us now" builds toward a threshold of pure distortion and drops into complete silence at the moment that threshold is punctured. the dotted silences add more tension than a mere overdriven signal could ever produce.
"in the game 2 win the game" 3" cd-r review (melted mind)
forbes has been releasing a steady stream of these little solo guys here and there. the kayo dot member, man behind rice control records, contributor to an array of other projects can come at you from several angles. on this particular batch of recordings he digitally edits and synthesizes his trumpet playing. while his live solo trumpet performances are purely acoustic studies of extended breathing textures, this is hyper cut-up and processed and the source is often obscured beyond recognition but still tangible. the outlandish comparison don cherry meets the mego sound comes to mind. it's intense, all over the stereo field, kinetic. and the final track is jazz, to accepting ears, with layered themes of muted trumpets. brilliant.
